CBD for PMAD: How is perinatal mood and anxiety disorder treated, and can CBD oil help

Prenatal mood and anxiety disorder, or PMAD, refers to a mental condition that occurs after having a baby. You may also develop the condition -after you adopt a child or experience stillbirth. PMAD can cause symptoms, including thoughts about harming your baby, sleep disturbance, and anxiety. Treatment for PMAD is a mix of psychotherapy, building social support, and getting enough exercise and sleep.

What is PMAD? And how do you confirm that you have it?

During the first year after childbirth, at least one in five biological females experience PMAD. PMAD, short for perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, is a collection of mental illnesses, including perinatal anxiety, panic disorder, and postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder.

Pregnancy is a potent stressor for some. The changes it causes to your health, body, and psychology will have short-term and long-term consequences. According to the CDC, many women develop postpartum depression or baby blues a few weeks after childbirth. In theory, the symptoms should improve, given enough time.

Consequently, after childbirth, it is “normal” to lose interest in the things you once enjoyed, you may feel the need to withdraw from friends and family, and you may have thoughts of self-harm or harming your baby.

What happens if postpartum depression or baby blues are left untreated?

PMAD may result. Why? 

Medical studies describe PMAD as a condition that stems from environmental and physical changes. When pregnant, your body will change in several ways, these changes will include shifts in stress and sex hormones. Consequently, your levels of stress, depression, or anxiety may go up.

When stressed, depressed, or anxious, you are at high risk of developing insomnia, you may have problems concentrating or completing tasks, and you can be irritable. All these factors combined, coupled with environmental factors including financial status, your support system and so on, may combine to cause PMADS. 

You are at elevated risk of developing PMADS if:

  • You have experienced a traumatic event recently.
  • Depression or anxiety runs in the family.

  • You delivered prematurely.
  • If you are a teen parent.
  • You have a history of depression, anxiety, or mental illness. 

Environmental factors that may cause PMADs include:

  • Substance abuse.

  • Domestic abuse or violence in the home.

What are the symptoms of PMADS, and can CBD oil help?

As mentioned, PMAD is a collection of several mental illnesses. Consequently, the symptoms are vast. You may develop anxiety, psychosis, depression, OCD, or PTSD. You know that you have PMADs if you experience symptoms including:

  • You cry or feel the need to cry too often -without reason.
  • Irritability, and intense anger.
  • Have difficulties carrying out everyday tasks.

Feeling depressed or anxious after childbirth is normal, meaning you should not be embarrassed about seeing a professional for help. We recommend getting professional opinion -if the symptoms do not fade after two weeks to a month, you have intrusive thoughts about harming yourself or your baby, or you find it difficult to complete tasks or work. 

CBD for PMADS: does it work?

CBD or cannabidiol is an extract of hemp or marijuana that exhibits benefits for several mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, psychosis, and OCD. CBD is a mood regulator, and it may improve sleep quality. 

Existing studies show that pure CBD oil presents little risk to adults and children and is thus unlikely to cause problems. However, the FDA does not regulate the CBD market, meaning you may expose your young to other cannabinoids if you purchase a contaminated product.
