CBD for PMAD: How is perinatal mood and anxiety disorder treated, and can CBD oil help

Prenatal mood and anxiety disorder, or PMAD, refers to a mental condition that occurs after having a baby. You may also develop the condition -after you adopt a child or experience stillbirth. PMAD can cause symptoms, including thoughts about harming your baby, sleep disturbance, and anxiety. Treatment for PMAD is a mix of psychotherapy, building social support, and getting enough exercise and sleep.

Can you use CBD for PMAD? There is limited research on using cannabidiol to treat PMAD. However, the evidence that exists, coupled with self-reports, suggests that CBD may help relieve or prevent symptoms triggered by the condition.

Below is everything you need to know about PMAD and CBD.

Quick take: is CBD good for PMAD?

  • PMAD symptoms should last a few days or weeks. If the symptoms persist beyond two weeks or a month, consider getting professional help.
  • Cannabinoids are fat soluble and may be passed from mother to child.
  • The FDA and CDC discourage the use of cannabinoids while pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • CBD remains present in breast milk for up to 6 days.
  • Using marijuana during pregnancy may lead to lower birth weight.
  • Using CBD topically is safe when breastfeeding or pregnant because the compound will not be absorbed into the bloodstream.

What is PMAD? And how do you confirm that you have it?

During the first year after childbirth, at least one in five biological females experience PMAD. PMAD, short for perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, is a collection of mental illnesses, including perinatal anxiety, panic disorder, and postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder.

I just had a baby, but I am not happy. Why?

Pregnancy is a potent stressor for some. The changes it causes to your health, body, and psychology will have short-term and long-term consequences. According to the CDC, many women develop postpartum depression or baby blues a few weeks after childbirth. In theory, the symptoms should improve, given enough time.

Consequently, after childbirth, it is “normal” to lose interest in the things you once enjoyed, you may feel the need to withdraw from friends and family, and you may have thoughts of self-harm or harming your baby.

What happens if postpartum depression or baby blues are left untreated?

PMAD may result. Why?

Medical studies describe PMAD as a condition that stems from environmental and physical changes. When pregnant, your body will change in several ways, these changes will include shifts in stress and sex hormones. Consequently, your levels of stress, depression, or anxiety may go up.

When stressed, depressed, or anxious, you are at high risk of developing insomnia, you may have problems concentrating or completing tasks, and you can be irritable. All these factors combined, coupled with environmental factors including financial status, your support system and so on, may combine to cause PMADS.

You are at elevated risk of developing PMADS if:

  • You have experienced a traumatic event recently.
  • Depression or anxiety runs in the family.
  • You had difficulties getting pregnant.
  • You delivered prematurely.
  • If you are a teen parent.
  • You have a history of depression, anxiety, or mental illness.

Environmental factors that may cause PMADs include:

  • Substance abuse.
  • Lack of social or financial support and financial stress.
  • Lack of communication.
  • Domestic abuse or violence in the home.

What are the symptoms of PMADS, and can CBD oil help?

As mentioned, PMAD is a collection of several mental illnesses. Consequently, the symptoms are vast. You may develop anxiety, psychosis, depression, OCD, or PTSD. You know that you have PMADs if you experience symptoms including:

  • You cry or feel the need to cry too often -without reason.
  • Irritability, and intense anger.
  • Have difficulties carrying out everyday tasks.
  • You have thoughts of harming yourself, your baby, or someone else.
  • You experience intrusive or upsetting thoughts about yourself or your baby.
  • You worry constantly.
  • Have trouble sleeping, or you sleep too much.
  • You hear voices or hallucinate (audio or visual hallucinations)
  • Are constantly worried.
  • You fear being alone with the baby.
  • You experience unexplained guilt.

Note that this is not a complete list. The symptoms of PMAD change over time, and may go away on their own, or you may need professional help.

Feeling depressed or anxious after childbirth is normal, meaning you should not be embarrassed about seeing a professional for help. We recommend getting professional opinion -if the symptoms do not fade after two weeks to a month, you have intrusive thoughts about harming yourself or your baby, or you find it difficult to complete tasks or work.

CBD for PMADS: does it work?

CBD or cannabidiol is an extract of hemp or marijuana that exhibits benefits for several mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, psychosis, and OCD. CBD is a mood regulator, and it may improve sleep quality.

Existing studies show that pure CBD oil presents little risk to adults and children and is thus unlikely to cause problems. However, the FDA does not regulate the CBD market, meaning you may expose your young to other cannabinoids if you purchase a contaminated product.

Remember, there is evidence that THC or marijuana can cause developmental problems in persons who start using it at an early age.

In short, if you decide to use CBD after childbirth, it is best to use formula.

The topical application of CBD oil to treat skin problems caused by anxiety is safe because CBD will not be absorbed into the bloodstream.

CBD for PMADs: how do you use it?

CBD for perinatal anxiety and pain.

You may use CBD to relieve perinatal anxiety without ingesting it. We recommend CBD massages. Why?

Prenatal massages offer numerous benefits, including:

  • CBD massages may help regulate hormones and relieve stress and anxiety.
  • Water retention during and after pregnancy can cause swelling, joint pain, and circulation issues. CBD massages help improve circulation and relieve pain and swelling.
  • Massages can improve sleep quality by relaxing the mind and muscles.

How is PMAD treated, and how can CBD help?

The symptoms of PMAD described above usually fade within a few days to a month. If they persist, professionals recommend.

Build a support system.

An overwhelming feeling of loneliness is the most prevalent symptom of PMAD. You may overcome that feeling by building a support system. For severe symptoms, medication or therapy could be necessary.
